Chrome Extension

The EduSignal Chrome Extension allows users to view school district data while browsing district websites. This section explains the specific data practices for the extension.

Data the Extension Collects

Website URLs: The extension reads the URL of websites you visit to determine if you are on a school district website. This URL matching happens locally in your browser against a downloaded list of district domains. URLs are not sent to our servers during normal browsing.

Domain Feedback: If you manually search for and select a district while on a website, we may collect:

  • The domain of the website you are visiting
  • The district you selected
  • Your browser user agent

This feedback helps us improve our district detection coverage. It does not include any personal browsing history.

Data Stored Locally

The extension stores the following data locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API:

  • A cached list of district domains (refreshed weekly)
  • Your authentication token if you link your EduSignal account (used to access subscriber features)

This data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers except when explicitly requesting district information.

Permissions

The extension requires the following permissions:

  • tabs: To read the URL of the current tab and detect district websites
  • storage: To cache district data and your authentication token locally
  • alarms: To periodically refresh the district domain list
  • sidePanel: To display district information in a side panel

Data Not Collected

The extension does not:

  • Track or store your browsing history
  • Collect data from non-district websites
  • Access page content, cookies, or form data
  • Share data with third-party advertisers

Uninstalling

When you uninstall the extension, all locally stored data (cached domains, authentication token) is automatically removed from your browser.
